Mixed Martial Arts for Beginners

Based on a human’s basic instincts of fight or flight and spanning back to ancient China, India, Egypt, Greece and nearly every civilization after that, mixed martial arts is a full contact combat sport that allows striking and grappling. Modern mixed martial arts is a combination of martial arts like wrestling, jiu jitsu, kickboxing, muay thai, boxing, taekwondo and karate.

Made popular by promotions like the UFC and Bellator, MMA has only recently become a global spectacle. With more people watching, more people are keen to learn and that means eventually there are more people who are skilled enough to teach. Today there are plenty of good MMA gyms with solid coaches who you can learn from.

The big points to learn are basic striking (usually taught through muay thai as it is very versatile), and basic grappling (a hybrid of wrestling and jiu jitsu). A basic game in each style is essential but for the most part fighters will be stronger in one or the other, standing or on the ground.

Some of MMA’s most affluent athletes or as fans call them “the greatest of all time” (GOAT) are now household names. Names like Conor MacGregor, Jon Jones, Georges St. Pierre are discussed millions of times across the internet, and those are just the big names. MMA is one of the fastest growing sports in the world. Taking a MMA class isn’t just about learning to become a skilled fighter, you learn essential movement skills, stay fit and healthy and develop a great community within your gym.

A basic MMA class will cover striking aspects as well as grappling specific for MMA. Such as takedowns as counters to punches or how to defend punches when you’re on your back. Like jiu jitsu, the amazing thing about taking classes in MMA is that you see yourself get better 1% each day, you just have to keep turning up.
